“Electric choreography, mythology-influenced storytelling, striking.” —Charlotte Observer

Hailing from the birthplace of Russian classical ballet, the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre presents three unforgettable works in the grand Ballet Russes tradition—replete with sumptuous sets, lush costuming, and gorgeous technical precision. In the Russian Seasons, lovers entwine to the unfolding crescendo of Ravel’s lusty Boléro, forest sprites frolic through the stylized poetic dream of Chopiniana, and a clever sultana fights for her life by spinning irresistible stories in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.
Special Screening of classic Ballet Films: March 16 at 2 pm
The Flynn Center also offers a Special Screening of two classic ballet films on Sunday, March 16 at 2 pm in the Amy E. Tarrant Gallery at the Flynn Center, ($5 suggested donation). Join this rare opportunity to see two special dance films, courtesy of the Sharry Underwood Dance Film Collection.
Rite of Spring (1989; 55 minutes), the powerful 1913 ballet choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky to Igor Stravinsky’s original score, was lost for more 60 years then pieced back together by dancer and dance scholar Millicent Hodson and re-created by the Robert Joffrey Ballet.
La Mort du Cygne (retitled Ballerina, 1938; 1 hour, 24 minutes) is the story of a Paris Opera ballet student whose devotion for the lead ballerina leads to disaster. This rare French film was one of the first about life as a ballet dancer.
