"If I had a farm in Vietnam and a home in hell, I’d sell my farm and go home.” —Etched on a Zippo cigarette lighter by a U.S. soldier during the Vietnam War

Fear and Loathing, based on Hunter S. Thompson's "gonzo" classic and other works, is a song-journal of the American landscape examined with the clarity of x-ray eyes.

Contemporary composer Phil Kline is “a true original” (New York Times) who stretches the boundaries between avant-garde classical and ambient electronic music. Kline teams with vocalists Theo Bleckmann and Wilbur Pauley to perform two song-cycles, Zippo Songs and Fear and Loathing, combining acoustic instrumentation, electronic experimentation, and provocative texts drawn from two vibrant bodies of literature—the poems American soldiers scratched on their Zippo cigarette lighters during the Vietnam War and the razor-edged, hallucinatory works of “gonzo journalist” Hunter S. Thompson.

Roster of musicians: Theo Bleckmann, baritone voice; Wilbur Pauley, bass voice; Todd Reynolds, violin; Ha-Yang Kim , cello; Andrew Russo, piano; John Hadfield , percussion; Phil Kline, guitar.

FlynnArts Activities Meet the Composer Lecture with Phil Kline: "Music and Social Responsibility": Saturday, April 12 at 12 pm; Amy E. Tarrant Gallery at the Flynn Center; FREE!

Acclaimed as one of the great modern independent composers, Phil Kline works with surprising sources—ranging from boom-boxes to cigarette lighters. In this special lunchtime lecture, Kline speaks about the historical responsibility of the artist as a social activist and reflects on the inspirations for his provocative new works.
