"I Land" - TWO PERFORMANCES!
Friday-Saturday, April 4-5, 2008 at 8 pm - $24 adults, $20 students
"To Mr. Woolford, hula is more than Hollywood kitsch. It is an important aspect of his identity and that of his home state. His show… does much to counteract the perception that Hawaii is merely a vacation fantasy land." —Los Angeles Times
Hilarious, defiant, and transcendent, I Land weaves together
traditional Hawaiian hula and talk-stories with hip-hop and spoken
word in a search for the meaning of heritage in a post-modern world.
Actor and hula dancer Keo Woolford’s semi-autobiographical
journey, created with director Roberta Uno, navigates the many
worlds where hula lives—backyard parties, package-tour kitsch,
and the sacred realm. “From high school racism, boy-band stardom,
a trek to drugged-out Los Angeles and return to the islands,
Woolford understands that the kumu (source of knowledge)
never leaves its possessor's soul, no matter how far he travels”
(Los Angeles Times).
